Coach John Fox and quarterback Jake Delhomme emphatically validated one another’s leadership positions with the Carolina Panthers after practice Wednesday.

Fox made it as clear as the blue sky above him that he isn’t planning a quarterback change when asked if Delhomme would remain the starter.

“I didn’t think that was a question, but if that needs to be clarified, yes with a capital Y,” he said.

Moments later, in the locker room, Delhomme was quizzed about whether Fox still had the ear of his players.

“I promise you there’s one voice in that team meeting room that’s in charge, and it’s his,” Delhomme said of Fox.

Delhomme said he’s been on a team when a coach no longer was in control of his players, but that that’s “not even remotely close” to being the case now.

For starting quarterbacks who play one of the worst games of their career, there is usually one salvation. There’s always another game to be played the next week to erase the memory.

The last six months might as well have been six years for Delhomme, whose five-interception performance in the 2008 NFC Divisional round of the playoffs cost the Carolina Panthers a chance at hosting the conference championship. The mistake-filled effort opened the door for the Arizona Cardinals’ surprising run to the Super Bowl, and put Delhomme in a spot most athletes dread, forced to wait more than half a year for a shot at redemption.
