The Carolina Panthers should have options aplenty tonight as they join the NFL draft after sitting out Round 1.
They held onto their 2011 first-round pick and are expected to do so again today, which would end a two-year stretch of trading away a future first-rounder.
Carolina’s long wait is now over as they’ll be closely watching tonight as the picks ahead of them come off the board.
The Panthers are situated at the midpoint of the second round, No. 48 overall, and would prefer to land a defensive lineman or wide receiver, but also could opt for a cornerback.
Based on pre-draft projections, nothing much happened in the first round to detract from players who were expected to be available when the draft resumes tonight.
There continues to be a good chance Carolina can come away with a defensive lineman, especially a tackle, or a wide receiver since those are perhaps the two deepest positions in the draft.

Aside from his daughter’s signature, there’s not much Brad Hoover likes about the cast he’s wearing on his right foot and ankle.
“I wish they’d cut it off right now,” he said Thursday.
The sight of Hoover on crutches only begins to tell the story of the dilemma the Carolina Panthers face this week as they try to creatively find ways to address the absence of their top three options to play fullback Sunday against unbeaten New Orleans.
Hoover, the usual starter and a 10-year veteran, has a high ankle sprain that could cause him to miss multiple games.

CHARLOTTE — A certain, unappealing, number caught the attention of the Carolina Panthers’ defense last week.
“The stat came up that the Panthers were last in the [NFL] against the rush,” Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis said after a 20-17 victory Sunday against the Washington Redskins at Bank of America Stadium.
“As a defense, we know we’re better than that. So we got together and talked about it. We wanted to hold them to some minus yards rushing.”
The Panthers didn’t accomplish that, but they did limit the Redskins to 74 yards on the ground, far below the league-worst 182.7 yards Carolina averaged in its first three games, all of which were losses.
“The run game we wanted to stop,” said defensive coordinator Ron Meeks, who, in his first season with Carolina, has brought in a new scheme that’s designed for his defenders to more aggressively pursue the ball carrier. “We changed some things up front and just executed. Everybody did a better job.”
One change was the presence of newly signed Hollis Thomas, a 6-foot, 340-pound defensive tackle whose job is to take up room in the middle of the line so linebackers Davis and Jon Beason are free to make plays.
“[I] have to do that, so [the linebackers] can hunt,” Thomas said.
Thomas’ presence allowed Beason to make a team-high 10 tackles and Davis to make seven. Defensive end Julius Peppers, who had been relatively quiet in the Panthers’ first three games, had four tackles, two sacks and three quarterback hurries.

Coach John Fox and quarterback Jake Delhomme emphatically validated one another’s leadership positions with the Carolina Panthers after practice Wednesday.
Fox made it as clear as the blue sky above him that he isn’t planning a quarterback change when asked if Delhomme would remain the starter.
“I didn’t think that was a question, but if that needs to be clarified, yes with a capital Y,” he said.
Moments later, in the locker room, Delhomme was quizzed about whether Fox still had the ear of his players.
“I promise you there’s one voice in that team meeting room that’s in charge, and it’s his,” Delhomme said of Fox.
Delhomme said he’s been on a team when a coach no longer was in control of his players, but that that’s “not even remotely close” to being the case now.

The Carolina Panthers have three more key players sidelined with injuries.
Starting linebacker Na’il Diggs, starting fullback Brad Hoover and backup running back Jonathan Stewart all missed practice Thursday. Diggs suffered bruised ribs during Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons, and Hoover is experiencing back spasms. Stewart has been plagued by left Achilles’ tendon pain since training camp.
Safety Chris Harris (knee) and defensive tackle Nick Hayden (toe) returned to practice on a limited basis after missing the Atlanta game.
Starting tackles Jordan Gross (knee) and Jeff Otah (shoulder) also were limited.

Carolina starting free safety Charles Godfrey has undergone surgery for a broken right hand, further depleting the defense.
Godfrey was injured in Saturday’s preseason loss at Miami. Coach John Fox wouldn’t say how long Godfrey will be out, but the team did make a roster move to add depth on Monday.
Veteran safety Kevin Kaesviharn was signed and the Panthers waived receiver Jason Carter. Kaesviharn turns 33 this week and is entering his ninth NFL season. He played for New Orleans in 2008.

Steve Smith loaded up the car early Sunday morning and the ugly memories returned.
Throughout his 90-minute drive to training camp, Smith replayed the scene a year ago when he broke Carolina teammate Ken Lucas’ nose with a sucker punch, an incident that produced a two-game suspension and another dent to the star receiver’s reputation.
On the same day Julius Peppers ended his off-season of discontent by showing up to camp and then avoiding reporters, Smith had plenty to say.
He got out of his car in front of the Wofford College dormitory, plunked down a mini refrigerator on the sidewalk and tackled the issue that has sometimes overshadowed his four Pro Bowl selections: his temper.
