What are the Bobcats doing?

Posted by David on 19th May 2010

Even as a 76ers fan, I cannot help but try to figure out what the Charlotte Bobcats are doing. Look at the progression the Bobcats have made in the past few years. Now look at the progression the Thunder have made in the past few years. It is light and day, and the reasoning behind it is the fact that Oklahoma City has a plan, and the Bobcats do not. When they became and NBA franchise, they attempted to build around Emeka Okafor. Years later, all they have to show for it is a watered-down Tyson Chandler. At least they were able to replace him with Brook Lopez…actually never mind, they drafted D.J. Augustin instead.

A real gem was drafting Brandon Wright, only to trade him for Jason Richardson. Then Richardson was traded for Boris Diaw and Raja Bell. Bell is no longer with the team. Other acquisitions such as Tyrus Thomas haven’t really done anything for this team. This team has reached its ceiling, and that ceiling is an exit in the first round of the playoffs. Instead of drafting North Carolina natives and drafting players to trade them for veterans, actually having a plan to build towards success would be a good idea for this team. Michael Jordan’s days as a team manager so far looks to be like Sam Bowie’s days on the court, if you get the reference.

Bobcats’ Jackson has bruised knee

Posted by GameSetMatch on 19th April 2010

The Charlotte Bobcats say an MRI on Stephen Jackson’s hyperextended left knee shows a small bone bruise but no structural damage.

The Bobcats swingman said Monday he felt “way sorer” but expects to start in Game 2 against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night. He sat out practice and had an ice wrap around the knee.

Jackson was injured when teammate Gerald Wallace dove for a loose ball and collided with him just before the first half of Game 1 ended Sunday. The Bobcats lost 98-89.

Bickerstaff’s proud of Bobcats’ path to playoffs

Posted by GameSetMatch on 14th April 2010

Bernie Bickerstaff’s estimation of the Charlotte Bobcats has a familiar tone.

“The only thing I know about them is, they compete,” said Bickerstaff, an assistant coach with the Chicago Bulls, the Bobcats’ opponent tonight at Time Warner Cable Arena in both teams’ NBA regular-season finale. “They play hard every night.”

Bickerstaff was reminded that’s how the Bobcats were often described in the three seasons he was their head coach, beginning in their expansion year of 2004 through 2007. Night in, night out, Bickerstaff’s Bobcats played hard, played with intensity – and usually lost.

“Well, yes, that’s the way it was then,” he said, laughing. “But the (Bobcats’) talent level has been upgraded since I was there.”

Bucks bench Redd, Bogut as Wallace’s double-double sparks Bobcats

Posted by GameSetMatch on 29th December 2009

Milwaukee Bucks coach Scott Skiles contemplated making lineup changes before Monday’s game against Charlotte, but announced about an hour before tipoff that he’d decided to “give it another game and see how we do.”

Trailing by 22 at halftime of another miserable performance, Skiles had seen enough. And his moves jolted his struggling team.

Michael Redd and Andrew Bogut never took off their warmups in the second half of the Bucks’ 94-84 loss to the Bobcats. The team’s second- and third-leading scorers were benched after combining to shoot 1-for-10 and play little defense in a one-sided matchup of teams that figure to contend for one of the final Eastern Conference playoff spots.

“What do I need to say? We were 4-13 in our last 17 games, now 4-14 in our last 18,” Skiles said. “Everybody has got to look at themselves right now.”

Bobcats’ Henderson dealing with rookie life

Posted by GameSetMatch on 19th November 2009

IT IS a rite of passage with NBA teams. The veterans always have something for the rookies to do. Bring the coffee. Buy the doughnuts. Deliver the newspapers.

Or, in the case of Charlotte Bobcats rookies Gerald Henderson and Derrick Brown, wear various colorful, sometimes sparkly, backpacks.

“The sillier the better,” Bobcats coach Larry Brown was saying before last night’s game against the 76ers. “They got Gerald a North Carolina one.”

They even got Bobcats guard Ray Felton, a former Tar Heel, to sign it. That would be Gerald Henderson, of Duke.

“He told me he burned it,” Brown said, laughing.

“That’s what I told him,” said Henderson, the onetime Episcopal Academy star. “That’s what I should have done. It’s somewhere long lost in my apartment. Now, they gave me a pink one. That’s OK. That’s better than Carolina. Anything is better than that.”

Bobcats exercise option on C Ajinca

Posted by GameSetMatch on 30th October 2009

The Charlotte Bobcats announced on Thursday they have exercised their option on center Alexis Ajinca for the 2010-11 season.

Ajinca, a seven-footer from France, appeared in 31 games in his rookie campaign in 2008-09, averaging 2.3 points and one rebound in limited playing time.

The 20th overall selection in the 2008 draft scored four points in just under 10 minutes in Charlotte’s season-opening loss to Boston on Wednesday.

Bobcats pick up Augustin’s 3rd-year option

Posted by GameSetMatch on 7th October 2009

The Charlotte Bobcats are exercising the third-year option in guard D.J. Augustin’s contract for the 2010-11 season.

The team has until the end of the month to decide whether to do the same with center Alexis Ajinca.

Augustin, the ninth pick in the 2008 draft, averaged 11.8 points and 3.5 assists last season. He led NBA rookies by shooting 89 percent from the foul line.

Augustin will make $2.1 million next season. Charlotte also has an option for a fourth season.

Bobcats coach Larry Brown was pleased to learn of the team’s decision.

Center swap: Okafor for Chandler

Posted by GameSetMatch on 29th July 2009

The Hornets have officially found a taker for Tyson Chandler in the Charlotte Bobcats, trading for fellow center Emeka Okafor and signaling an unexpected shift in thinking that suggests New Orleans does plan to try to keep up with the contenders and spenders in the Western Conference.

Charlotte coach Larry Brown was willing to jettison the Bobcats’ first draft pick in a deal involving 26-year-old centers, a trade that brought different financial relief to both teams and hopes they’ll thrive under different big men.
The Hornets have been trying to unload the 7-foot-1 Chandler for several months. Last season they sent him to Oklahoma City, but the trade was rescinded after Chandler failed a physical amid concerns over a lingering toe injury.

Bobcats, Felton differ on contract terms

Posted by GameSetMatch on 16th July 2009

Raymond Felton’s agent went to Las Vegas confident he was close to hammering out a long-term deal with the Charlotte Bobcats.

Kevin Bradbury left the meeting with Charlotte general manager Rod Higgins disappointed and far apart in negotiations. “We’re definitely not close as far as what we’re discussing and what we think fair market [value] is for Raymond,” Bradbury said Wednesday, a day after the meeting. While Bradbury declined to discuss numbers, he indicated there was a surprisingly hefty difference in the deals he and Higgins proposed for the restricted free agent point guard.
